Amid a critical shortage of surgical sutures at Nonga General Hospital in East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea, the Chinese medical team stepped in without hesitation to provide timely assistance.
On April 23, Nonga General Hospital informed the China–Papua New Guinea Friendship Association that it was facing a severe shortage of surgical sutures, which would significantly affect scheduled operations the following day. Upon learning of the situation, Dr. Chen Zijun, leader of the 14th Chinese Medical Team to PNG, took immediate action. With the coordination of the China–Papua New Guinea Friendship Association, the urgently needed sutures were airlifted from the capital Port Moresby to Rabaul, some 900 kilometers away, and were delivered to the hospital early on the morning of April 25—just in time to address the emergency.
Hospital staff expressed deep gratitude for China’s prompt support, calling the donation “a lifeline delivered at a critical moment.” Local medical personnel noted that the sutures would be used immediately for both emergency and routine surgeries, ensuring that patients receive timely treatment.
This donation once again reflects the Chinese medical team’s noble spirit of “putting patients first” and highlights the deep friendship between the peoples of China and Papua New Guinea.
