On April 20, 2025, Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, met in Beijing with a delegation from Papua New Guinea led by Koni Iguan, Deputy Speaker of the National Parliament and Member of the ruling PANGU Party.
Liu Jianchao stated that under the strategic guidance and personal promotion of the leaders of both countries, China-PNG relations have developed rapidly. China attaches great importance to developing relations with Papua New Guinea and is willing to work with PNG to implement the important consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Marape, consolidate political mutual trust, expand practical cooperation in various fields, and promote the continued development of the China-PNG Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
As a key country in the Pacific Islands region, PNG has made positive contributions to advancing China’s relations with Pacific Island countries, which China highly appreciates. China will continue to deepen its cooperation with Pacific Island countries and support local economic and social development.
In the face of global changes and turbulence, China is ready to work with Papua New Guinea and other Global South countries to oppose unilateralism, hegemony, and expansionism, and to safeguard the common interests of developing countries. Political parties play an important role in national economic and social development. China is willing to strengthen exchanges with PNG political parties and deepen the sharing of governance experience.
Koni Iguan noted that this year marks the 50th anniversary of Papua New Guinea’s independence. Shortly after gaining independence, PNG established diplomatic relations with China.
Over the decades, China has provided valuable support to PNG in infrastructure construction, education, healthcare, and other areas, helping the country enter a new stage of economic and social development.
Political parties in PNG highly value their relationship with the Communist Party of China. For many members of this delegation, it is their first visit to China. Witnessing China’s remarkable achievements in economic development and improving people’s livelihoods has set a benchmark for PNG’s future development and further strengthened our confidence.
PNG is willing to learn from China’s development experience to better build its own nation.
