While the number of new HIV infections has steadily declined worldwide in recent years, Papua New Guinea is witnessing a worrying trend in the opposite direction. Latest data shows that the country’s HIV prevalence rate has risen to 1.5%, far exceeding the globally recognized “manageable” threshold. This figure is not only alarming—it is a loud and urgent warning. “Globally, new HIV infections have dropped by 39% since 2010. But here in our country, they have increased significantly, with around 30 new cases every day, including babies born with HIV,” said Acting Health Secretary Ken Wai. His words should ring alarm…
In recent days, a series of unauthorized police roadblocks in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, has drawn widespread public concern. Despite repeated directives from the Police Commissioner banning such activities, some individuals have taken advantage of their positions to extort money at illegal checkpoints, seriously disrupting public order and undermining the credibility of law enforcement. In response to the growing frequency of these incidents, Mr. Lin Hua’an, Executive Vice Chairman of the China–Papua New Guinea Friendship Association, held discussions with Deputy Police Commissioner Benjamin Turi. Representing the concerns of the Chinese community and Chinese enterprises in PNG,…
On June 15, 2025, the sound of drums echoed through Port Moresby, with dragons and lions dancing and dazzling face-changing performances winning thunderous applause. The Sir Hubert Murray Stadium, a landmark venue in the capital city of Papua New Guinea, was packed with people and filled with excitement. Chairman Lin Huanong stated that the “China Day” event was not just a cultural showcase, but a true embodiment of people-to-people connectivity. He expressed gratitude for the support and promotion from the National Capital District government, as well as the active participation of the Chinese Embassy in PNG and the local Chinese…
In the volcanic and island-dotted landscape of the South Pacific, a historic document quietly made its mark — the Melanesian Agreement. But its significance goes far beyond what a single sheet of paper might suggest. Jointly signed by the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the Autonomous Bougainville Government, this agreement signals a substantive step forward in Bougainville’s journey toward potential independence. For Papua New Guinea, the agreement is both the fulfillment of a peace promise and a major test of national unity. The accord traces back to June 12, 2025, at Burnham Military Camp in New Zealand, where,…
Yesterday, over 600 kilograms of illicit drugs and counterfeit cigarettes were publicly incinerated in an open field on the outskirts of Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea. These substances were seized between 2022 and 2025 by the National Drug and Vice Squad (NDVS), primarily from operations in the National Capital District, Central Province, and Gulf Province. This incineration was more than a symbolic act of victory — it also served as a stark reflection of reality: the drug crisis Papua New Guinea faces is far more severe than the thick smoke rising from the site. Detective Thomas Moyan,…
Since 2024, the Guangzhou Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese has been actively exploring new approaches to overseas Chinese affairs. Leveraging both domestic and international overseas Chinese organizations, it has pioneered a new brand initiative — the “Guangzhou Overseas Chinese Salon,” known as “Guangzhou Tea House”. This innovative project draws inspiration from the traditional Cantonese tea house culture — open doors to welcome guests and tea as a medium for connection. Through the sharing of tea and heartfelt conversations, the initiative serves as a warm platform to strengthen emotional bonds and identity between overseas Chinese and their ancestral homeland. It also…
In an effort to promote the sustainable development of Papua New Guinea’s palm oil industry and achieve a win-win outcome for economic growth and ecological protection, key stakeholders from the sector convened a roundtable meeting in Port Moresby on June 23. The meeting was chaired by PNG’s Minister for Oil Palm, Hon. Francis Maneke, with the participation of Kepson Pupita, Secretary of the Oil Palm Industry Corporation (OPIC). A delegation from the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), led by Chief Executive Officer Joseph D’Cruz, also attended the meeting and held in-depth discussions with PNG officials. The discussions focused on…
In Papua New Guinea’s capital, Port Moresby, the city’s law enforcement campaign has entered what officials are calling a “tactical transition phase.” According to the latest briefing from the Metropolitan Police Command, the phased rollout of Operation Jubilee 25 is progressing steadily in preparation for the country’s upcoming 50th Independence Anniversary in 2025. Judging from the current pace, police posture has now swiftly shifted from public awareness campaigns to a zero-tolerance approach, signaling the government’s deep commitment to social stability in this politically symbolic moment. “We’re entering the final week of Phase One: inform, inform, and inform,” said Metropolitan Commander…
Recently, I read Out of Poverty by Xi Jinping, which sparked a strong interest in the strategies and methods adopted by the Chinese government in its poverty alleviation efforts. China, a country with a population of 1.5 billion, has successfully lifted more than 850 million people out of poverty. Xi’s book served as a catalyst for my deeper exploration of this achievement. The Chinese government had pledged to eradicate extreme poverty by 2020. However, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic—which I personally view as a man-made phenomenon—significantly hindered the progress of many organizations around the world in achieving their goals…
On the afternoon of June 20, 2025, H.E. Edgar Tomas Q. Auxilian, Ambassador of the Philippines to Papua New Guinea, warmly received Mr. Lin Huanong, President of the China–Papua New Guinea Friendship Association, and Mr. Anderson Ting, General Manager of Vision City, at the Philippine Ambassador’s Residence in Port Moresby. The meeting, held at the ambassador’s cordial invitation, underscored the Philippine Embassy’s high regard for the Chinese community and civil exchanges. It also served as strong recognition of President Lin’s long-standing efforts in promoting people-to-people ties among China, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines, as well as his contributions to…
