A touching scene recently unfolded in the Makana community of 9-Mile, Port Moresby — Chinese doctors, in collaboration with a local pharmacy, provided free health check-ups, consultations, and medical advice to residents. This was not only an act of medical compassion that transcended national borders, but also a profound exchange across language and cultural barriers.
The initiative was organized by the Eliseo Group in partnership with a team of Chinese medical experts, as part of a pre-Easter Public Health Week campaign. It brought tangible healthcare benefits to the residents of the Makana area and surrounding communities.
On the first day of the outreach, crowds of residents came to consult with doctors, creating a warm and lively atmosphere.
Many ordinary citizens, who could not usually afford high medical costs, finally had the chance to receive face-to-face consultations and guidance from professional doctors.
“The Chinese medical team brought not only their skills, but also genuine compassion,” said an elderly woman emotionally. She had been suffering from chronic knee pain for years without proper treatment. During this visit, she not only received a diagnosis from a Chinese doctor but was also given free medication.
According to organizers, the outreach involved nine seasoned Chinese medical experts from various specialties, all with long-standing experience in international public health. Their visit was not a brief mission — over the past 23 years, the Chinese medical teams have worked deeply within PNG’s grassroots communities, going from village to village, spreading health knowledge and serving over 160,000 people.

Chen Zijun, the captain of the 14th Chinese Medical Team to PNG, spoke at the event:
“We’re not here to show off our skills, but to use our hands and hearts to truly help the local people. Our goal is not only to treat illnesses but also to plant seeds of friendship through every free clinic we hold.”

This was no ordinary medical outreach — it was a meaningful reflection of deepening friendship between the peoples of China and Papua New Guinea. The Chinese medical experts have quietly dedicated themselves overseas, day after day, without seeking personal gain. In doing so, they have not only earned the trust of patients but also helped shape China’s image as a responsible and compassionate major power.

“Chinese doctors are not here to promote themselves — they are here to do real work,” said Jason Wen, Operations Director of Eliseo Group. “That’s exactly why we chose to collaborate with the Chinese medical team in PNG.”
In the South Pacific — long dominated by Western narratives — the Chinese medical team is quietly transforming perceptions. Through subtle yet impactful efforts, more and more Papua New Guineans are coming to know a China that is genuine, warm, and committed. What we’re witnessing is not just medical care, but trust; not just a health campaign, but a gesture of friendship.
As team leader Chen Zijun aptly put it:
“With every injection and every dose, we convey the warmth of China; with every step we take, we measure the growing friendship between China and Papua New Guinea.”
